Living Memorial Sculpture Garden

Located about 40 miles south of the California-Oregon state line, Living Memorial Sculpture Garden commemorates, through a statue garden, a commemorative wall, and the planting of thousands of trees, all those affected by war.

Envisioned by Jim Leach and created by Dennis Smith in 1988, this memorial includes several different statues that each exudes different meaning with regards to the effects of war. Including such statues as "The Refugees," "The Why Group," "The Greatest Generation," "The Flute Player," and "Those Left Behind" (to name a few), this memorial garden lets each visitor contemplate the effects of war in a peaceful, outdoor setting. Jim Leach was a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and seeks to ensure that the 2,188 fallen helicopter pilots of the Vietnam War are never forgotten.

The U.S. Forest Service provided 136 acres of land to be used for the Living Memorial Sculpture Garden. Numerous volunteers planted thousands of acres of trees to coincide with the dedication of this memorial. Today the sculpture garden is maintained by the Kiwanis Club of Weed, CA.

Several nearby tourist sites are located about 15 minutes by car southwest of Living Memorial Sculpture Garden: Shasta Abbey, Mt. Shasta, Living Waters Recreation, Black Bear Building and Art Gallery, and Sierra Wilderness Seminars.
