San Francisco History Room and Archives


Located at the main public library is the San Francisco History Room and Archives. The California History Room offers a collection of various life moments from prehistoric periods to the present. Anyone who wishes to know about California history and specifically San Francisco can do their research in this room and archive. Books, periodicals, photographs, and journals are all a part of the catalog in the history room and archives. Newspapers, maps, and other Ephemera will be found as well. Vertical file materials, telephone books, genealogical information, and some rare books are provided to visitors.

Library hours are 9:30am to 4pm Monday through Friday. Holidays will close the library and history room archives. The library is called Sutro Library, and due to a lack of funds they are not open on Saturdays. Anyone who has had family in the San Francisco area can track their family through the artifacts in the history room and archives. Records of births and deaths are also present in the room. Images provided in the section can be of famous or non famous individuals based on depicting what life was really like, as well as how the land has evolved over time.
