Shasta State Historic Park

Shasta State Historic Park is located in Redding, California. The park features the remains of old 1850s brick buildings that were once Shasta City, the northern mining district. These cottages, roads and other ruins are a silent vestige of the activity that went on here during the California gold rush.

There are still iron shutters on the big, iron hinges that were used before doors and windows. The buildings are full of grass and are roofless. The County Courthouse has been restored to look how it did back in 1861, which was the year when it was converted from a commercial use building to the courthouse. The courthouse is now used to show historical exhibits along with historic California Artwork.

The courthouse is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm. It is advised that visitors dress in layered clothing as the weather can change. Summer and spring are warm, not hot and it can get quite cool during the fall and winter.

At Shasta State Historic Park in the town of Shasta with a population of only 750 people, visitors will be able to visit the ruins of a gold mining town, including the post office, church, school, a store and the oldest Masonic Lodge in California.
