The Memorial Church of Stanford University

The Memorial Church of Stanford University is located in the center of the campus in Palo Alto, California. It is considered the University's architectural jewel based on its prominent design. It is also an interdenominational church. Jane Stanford built the church as a memorial to her husband. The university was constructed as a memorial to their son. The Stanford's were a religious family, but did not have a strict denomination. It is one of the reasons the church is so interdenominational today.

The first chaplain was Reverend Charles Gardner. He dedicated the church in 1903. Guided tours of the church are offered on Fridays at 2pm. It is also possible to tour the church on the last Sunday of every month at 11:15am. There are no tours given on holidays. The tour begins at the front of the church. The history of how it was founded, why it was founded, and how it is a prominent part of Stanford University is all part of the tour. Also as part of the tour is the history of how it survived through two troublesome earthquakes. Masses are held at the church weekly for students and staff.
