Twentynine Palms Oasis (Oasis of Mara)


Twentynine Palms Oasis is located inside Joshua Tree National Park and is often times referred to as the Oasis of Mara. Palms Oasis is located directly behind the Oasis Visitor Center. The trail is approximately ½ mile loop and is one of the few paved trails in Joshua Tree. Joshua Tree National Park is located in southeast California and was declared an official national park in 1994 and has been an official national monument since the 1930's. the park covers a total of 790,000 acres which is slightly smaller than Rhode Island. The park receives an estimated 1.4 million visitors per year according to 2006 data.

The park is named after the Joshua Tree. The correct name for the tree is Yucca Brevifolia. The Joshua Tree is unique to the park because it is higher, drier, but slightly cooler than most deserts in California. The tree became known throughout the country in the early 1990's as the rock and roll band U2 named their most successful album after the tree.

There are nine campgrounds in the park that fill up on a regular basis. For people seeking to camp in Joshua Tree it is recommended that reservations be made well in advance. The hiking trails and rock climbing opportunities are abundant within the park.
