According to a survey by Deloitte published at Statista.com, consumers are planning to purchase a wide variety of different types of gifts for the holiday season. Last year, about 53 percent of U.S. respondents stated that they planned on buying clothing as a holiday gift. Аpproximately the same percentage of people said that they planned to purchase gift cards or gift certificates this season. About 46 percent of the respondents stated that they expected to purchase games or toys, and 39 percent stated they wanted to buy liquor or food items as gifts.

Many people take advantage of holiday sales and promotions to make a purchase that they’ve been holding off on. The graph below shows the results of a survey published at Statista.com divided by age groups and types of products. In 2018, about 34 percent of people between the ages of 18 and 29 said that they planned to use promotions to buy consumer electronics — the most popular category among all age groups. About 32 percent of respondents aged from 30 to 59 years old named consumer electronics as the most desired choice to purchase with the holiday promotions.

Meanwhile, about 28 percent of U.S. respondents from 18 to 29 years old and 24 percent of respondents from 30 to 59 years old said that they planned to use promotions to purchase apparel or footwear, making it the second most popular category named.
