Bachin' wi' Big' 'n Ritz

Posted 05-01-2012 at 11:36 AM by LookinForMayberry

Just finished a late breakfast after sweeping and vacuuming. Bigun and Ritz are deep into their morning naps.

Well, truthfully, it's hard to see where Ritz' evening slumber separates from her morning nap or, for that matter from her afternoon nap. Pretty much Ritz is the stuffed dog that snores, which is why I wanted Bigun, so it's a good thing.

DH went off fishing for a bit, so it's just me and the dogs. I walked Big' through the woodlands to the park earlier this...

Charting a New Course

Posted 04-30-2012 at 06:55 PM by LookinForMayberry

When I was graduating from high school ('74), the student adviser looked over my academic records and informed me: "Given your test scores and grades, you could probably do anything you want. Since you are a woman, I suggest Accounting, Nursing, or Teaching."

I was insulted. I was a woman in an age when we were free of stereo-types. I would be a leader, not a follower!

As it turned out, working full-time and taking classes as I could, it was nineteen...

Staying in HERE, NOW

Posted 04-25-2012 at 06:41 AM by LookinForMayberry

My weekly newsletter from Shamabhala's Pema Chodron reminds me that "we continually run away from the present moment, how we avoid being here just as we are. That’s not considered to be a problem. The point is to see it."

Aging, growing fatter (it seems) by the day, locked in with failing health, out of work -- hmmm, why would I not want to remain HERE?

Then I recall all that is right in my world, and how so many others have it so worse.

Good Catch, Bigun!

Posted 04-23-2012 at 11:39 AM by LookinForMayberry

Today's pollen count was down, I felt better, and we'd bought pollen-filter masks yesterday, so I felt equipped to face the elements.

Big' and I "hit the trails!"

I unclip the lead as we get to the trail head, and pull the chuckit out from under my arm, and he starts bouncing, eye whites wide, tongue lolling, tail waggin' and hind feet springing. Pogo dog!

I LAUNCH the ball down the first trail and he's OFF like a blur. With my weak, wobbly...

Bigun, Ritzie, and Peppers

Posted 04-21-2012 at 10:19 PM by LookinForMayberry

Bigun doesn't eat carrots. He likes cauliflower cores and broccoli stems, but he LOVES bell peppers: green peppers, red peppers, yellow peppers, orange peppers. When the chopping block comes out in the kitchen, Bigun is THERE, hoping. If the peppers come out, one would think I was chopping up beef steaks.

Today's lunch was a large garden salad, and I had 2/3rds of an orange bell pepper that I cut from the core. After removing the seed pod, I pulled what remained of the flesh from...
