School Rankings Available from FL Dept of Education

Posted 02-02-2012 at 12:27 PM by Sunshine Rules

The Florida Department of Education has released the rankings of all of the state's 3078 schools, which includes both public and charter, based mainly on FCAT scores.

Elementary & middle school rankings also included factors such as whether schools helped struggling students progress. High School rankings also included graduation rates & how many students passed college level courses such as Advanced Placement. Of course, FCAT scores are not the only criteria parents consider when selecting school districts, but it is an important factor.

The highest ranked elementary school in Sarasota county? Fruitville Elementary at #91, beating out Southside at #105 and Bay Haven at #114. I was surprised to see that Brentwood Elementary dropped from an A rated school to a B. Brentwood and Emma Booker were the only Sarasota county elementary schools not receiving a grade of A.

As to middle schools, the Sarasota School of Arts & Science was the highest ranked at #12 with Sarasota Middle School close behind at #16. Booker Middle School did raise their grade from a C in 2010 to a B in 2011.

Of the high schools, none received an A rating, all were rated B, with Sarasota High receiving the highest ranking at #119. Riverview High, which has a reputation of being the best high school in Sarasota, came in at #161 with Venice High at #176 and North Port High at #257.

Of the combination schools (elementary, middle & elements of high), Pine View in Sarasota was ranked #1 in the state. Laurel Nokomis School came in #10, Imagine School at North Port #74 and Imagine Palmer Ranch at #133 (they were the only school in Sarasota county in that category to get a B rating, the others were all A's).

Manatee county schools:

Four elementary schools were at the top of the list, with Gene Witt ranked #82 in the state and B. D. Gullett ranked #143. Braden River elementary dropped from an A in 2010 to a B in 2011, but 3 schools went from a C rating to an A -- Florine Abel, Robert Prine and William Bashaw. Seven others improved their rankings from a C to a B, including Bayshore elementary.

Of the middle schools, the top 3 ranked were R. Dan Nolan at #115, Carlos Haile at #158 and Braden River at #195.
Manatee county has the only A rated high school in the Sarasota - Bradenton area, Manatee High ranked at #159. Lakewood Ranch High was the highest ranked high school in our area at #78 in the state. LWR High received a B rating. Braden River High came in at #145. The surprise was Southeast High, which improved their rating from a D to a B, receiving a ranking of #186 in the state.

Lots of information to digest, but it’s good to see the state's education department putting things "out in the sunshine" for parents to read. Knowledge is power.
