If you’ve purchased a home in FL in 2011 and have made that home your permanent residence, you may qualify for a Homestead Exemption, which can save you $$$ each year on your property tax bill.
The Homestead Exemption exempts the first $25,000 of value from ad valorem taxes and another $25,000 on assessed values between $50,000 and $75,000 for a total of $50,000. The 2nd $25,000 in exemption does not apply to all taxing authorities. The exemptions could potentially save a homeowner approximately $500 on their annual tax bill, depending upon the millage rates.
You are entitled to a FL Homestead Exemption in Sarasota county if, as of January 1st of the year for which you are applying:
you are a permanent resident of Florida,
you hold legal title to your property,
the instrument by which you hold title is recorded in the official records of Sarasota County,
and you make the same your permanent residence.
In order to meet the application deadline, you must apply by March 1st of the year for which you are claiming an exemption.
To apply for the Homestead Exemption, homeowners will need to provide specific documentation to show evidence of ownership to the Property Appraisers Office. Recommended documentation to file includes: a copy of your deed to the property OR tax bill or a copy of a proprietary lease to a cooperative (if applicable).
All applicants must also present a valid FL Drivers License showing the correct property address OR valid FL issued ID card by the FL Dept of Motor Vehicles with the correct property address if you do not drive.
All applicants must also provide one of the following items: a FL vehicle registration, proof of FL voter registration, a copy of the 1st page of your most recent income tax showing your home address, a professional license issued by the state of FL.
All applicants are required by FL law to provide their social security number. Married individuals must provide this information for a spouse, whether the spouse’s name is on the deed or not.
Once you have applied for and obtained a Homestead Exemption, you will not be required to go through the application progress in future years for the same property.
