My Daily Life and Thoughts while in San Diego | List of Best Posts
This blog is where I express myself to the world or at least to those who might stop by to read what I post . Maybe God will use what I post (I am a Christian and this blog will have a most decidedly Christian bent to it) to good effect in the lives of my readers.

I may turn some of my posts into a book. I may cease blogging here altogether. Who knows. But for now..I am content to post away in this, my own little corner of the world.

Rather than reading through my now lengthy list of posts you may wish to read what I consider to be my very best posts or you can just read the posts that deal with a single subject category that might interest you.

Please know that I am open to any input on any topic I write about. If you have something to say about anything you see written here please....feel free to speak up in the form of leaving a comment or sending me a PM (private message).

And if you are in San Diego and wish to meet the one and only Carlos (that's me )...drop me a private message. I always enjoy meeting one of my readers!

Notice of ice cream special to my esteemed readers!

Posted 02-08-2009 at 09:21 PM by carlos123

Well...at least to those of you in San Diego.

Yesterday I uncovered a fridge full of Ben & Jerry's ice cream pints for only $1 each! That's ONE dollar each!

Normally they are $5 or $6 each.

Only one flavor though. Some kind of fudge, vanilla, walnut something or other. It's officially called "Banana Split". Yum...yum it was SO good! I should say...they...were so good given that I wolfed down two pints. One for dinner last night and one for lunch today!

Anyway I thought I would let those of you, my readers, who might like a bit of the best ice cream in the world at such a cheap price...in on the deal.

You can find this incredible deal at the .99 store in the shopping center at the corner of Clairemont Mesa Blvd and Clairemont Drive. I think the shopping center is called the Clairemont Town Center or some such.

I am not affiliated with .99 cent stores or Ben & Jerry's. I just thought I would tell you all about this incredible deal in case anyone in San Diego was interested.

Please leave a couple for me .

They are a bit hard to find but if you ask any store clerk where the ice cream is...they should be able to direct you.

And tell them Carlos sent you. Maybe if enough people say "Carlos sent me", they might end up giving me some free toilet paper LOL.

I wonder if I can make a news story out of this and get paid for it. Hmm...

PS. Just kidding about the Carlos sent me part. Since they will never know my name...it wouldn't do any good .

Just me again...posting in my own comment.

Yeah, the photo of me was quite eye opening wasn't it ? It will scroll off the page soon enough as soon as I get busy writing some more blog posts. Haven't felt like writing much lately so I haven't kept up with things here like I should have.

I better get busy blogging. I wouldn't want to become known around here as the poster with the eye .

I think I will find another good photo of myself and post it. Just having some fun with my blogging.

    Hi Carlos,

Glad you discovered the 99 Cents Only Store! It's one of Clairemont's best kept secrets.

What I really like about it, is you never know what special stuff they might get. One day it could be Breyers Ice Cream. Another day, Bertolli Frozen Meals in a Bag (which are delicious).

The Sara Lee breads and bagels are great when they have them in stock. They are usually kept on stacks of large plastic bread racks near the back of the store.

Also check the smaller freezers in the front corner near the toilet paper. Sometimes they have good frozen meals as well.

I also buy fresh vegetables and fruits there, which are usually cheaper than most other places.

The other place I highly recommend is Kobey's Swap Meet (Flea Market). It's held in the parking lot of the Sports Arena, in Pt. Loma (near Sports Arena Blvd and Rosecrans). It's held every Fri, Sat & Sun (7am - 3pm). But never go if the weather looks like rain because few vendors show up. Sunday is usually has the most vendors and Friday the fewest. You can usually get great deals on used stuff. You can even bargain with the vendors to get the stuff cheaper. I know money is tight for you, so one example is you can get used clothing (pants, shirts) for around $1 each, often in very good condition. They sell just about anything you can think of, sometimes for next to nothing. Some vendors are regulars and are there every week, while others are one-timers who just want to get rid of their personal items. These one-timers are usually the ones who give the best deals. But you need to show up as early as possible (around 7am) to get the best bargains, since the best items usually sell the fastest.

I know a bus goes past the Sports Arena, but not sure which one?

    Blog is looking good!

    Hey RD5050!

    Great to see you again.

Yeah..I've gotten into going to that dollar store quite a bit lately.

Loaves of bread (whole wheat mixed in with some good ol' preservatives but still...) only $1 each.

Nice big heads of broccoli and cauliflower...only $1 each.

Lots and lots of nice salad dressings to use with the cauliflower and broccoli...again only $1 each.

Bath soap, can openers, toilet paper rolls (only .39 each), and all manner of other things. All a $1 or less.

    It's a paradise for a person like me...of...what shall it call it...humble means .

Thanks for the encouragement on the blog RD5050. I haven't been posting much lately. Partly due to discouragement and partly because I've been so busy with other things.

But I hope to post again soon. So much has been happening. All working out for my best I think but so much...that I don't quite know where to start writing about it.

Just today another major break through with respect to God opening the windows of heaven to meet my needs.

I hope to write more about all this later.

I just re-read your comment RD5050 and it struck me that one must show up at 7:00 AM to get the best deals.

    7:00 AM?!

I think that's a...ahem...well...hmmm...a bit early for me LOL.

I usually don't start realizing who I am and where I am until about 9:00 AM! By the time I figure where I am going and what I am supposed to do..well...it might be 11:00 AM. At which time it's time to eat my breakfast which I finish around noon. Then it's time for lunch of course. Followed by a time of quiet contemplation to remind myself of who I am, where I am, and what I'm supposed to be doing which gets me out the door around...hmm...let's see...9:00 AM + 11:00 AM and then adding noon to that...puts me out the door around 1:00 PM I think LOL.

That's on a weekend mind you. Weekdays I try to head out earlier even if I don't know anything about anything until much later in the day .

I will definitely check out the Kobe swap meet based on your recommendation alone RD5050. You sound like a man who knows the area well. It's an honor to have you reading my humble blog.

Getting to Kobey's at 7:00am isn't absolutely necessary, but it does make a big difference in finding the best bargains.

A lot of Kobey's customers are regulars who go every single weekend.

We regular customers know who the regular vendors are, and we skip past them in search of the one-time (garage sale) vendors, who are scattered throughout the swap meet. These one-time vendors bring their personal stuff to sell, and it's often in very good condition, and often very cheap since they only have one day to get rid of it.

In contrast, the regular vendors can ask higher prices because they know if their stuff doesn't sell this weekend, they can just bring the same stuff with them the following weekend.

And by getting to Kobey's early as possible, you have the greatest opportunity to find the best used stuff before it is sold.

As I previously mentioned, Sunday has the most vendors (maybe 500) and Saturday (maybe 300 - 400) and Friday (maybe 100 - 200).

And the amount of vendors varies each weekend throughout the year. During Spring/Summer the amount picks up, and around Christmas it reaches it's peak. Then it falls off after Christmas until next Spring.

Whenever an event is happening inside the Sports Arena (like the circus), it may cause the swap meet to be a little smaller for that weekend.

Anyway, glad you are going to Kobey's. You will definitely enjoy it, and you will find practically everything you need for dirt cheap / give-away prices.

One other thing about Kobey's, is they have several rows of vendors who sell only new merchandise.

These new merchandise vendors are all grouped together in the front rows of the swap meet.

I would just skip these rows of new merchandise vendors, and focus only the rows of used merchandise vendors who are in the back rows of the swap meet.

Also ... thanks for the tip on Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream at 99 Cents Store. Just finished a pint of Banana Split yesterday and it was great!

I am definitely going to Kobe's this coming Sunday RD5050! For sure, for sure.

Based mostly on your input here (thanks for that!).

I don't know if I can find what I am looking for but it's worth a try. I am looking for something called a USB Wifi Bongle (Dongle?). It acts like a wireless card in a computer but one connects it to a computer through a USB cable.

I have decided to give up on window cleaning and am going into the wireless security testing and securing field and I need a wireless card that picks up routers a lot better than the one that I have.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the ice cream RD5050. I wonder if a lot of my readers went over there and got some. I was there yesterday and saw only one or two left! Out of the 30-40 they had when I first posted the deal to my blog here.

I guess I will have to stock up when I post about any other deals .

Glad you decided to go to Kobeys on a Sunday (today). It was a very big day today. Lots of vendors showed up. Sundays will even get bigger during the next few months as the weather turns to non-stop sunshine every weekend.

Regarding the USB WiFi device, I know exactly what you are referring to. I have bought them at Kobeys in the past. I think the last one I got was a Netgear 802.11G USB for around $5. I also picked up models by Linksys. Some were the size of a USB thumbdrive, and some were small plastic boxes, approximately the size of a deck of playing cards, with a small antenna attached. So you just need to search the vendors, and you'll eventually find someone selling one. It's hard to say who will have one, because different vendors show up with different merchandise every week.

If you do find one, and the price seems a bit too high, offer them less. They will often accept your lower offer if they just want to get rid of it.

The thing I like most about Kobey's, is you never know what you will find there. Vendors bring all kinds of different used stuff, and often just want to get rid of it for next to nothing.

I've been to lots of flea markets in the past, and Kobeys is one of the best ones I've ever been to.

Kobeys regular weekly vendors often buy the contents of abandoned public storage lockers and bring it to Kobeys to sell. So you never know what they may have. Sometimes it's electronics, sometimes computer stuff, sometimes tools, sometimes sporting goods, etc. It all depends on what was inside the storage locker.

The one-time/garage-sale vendors usually are just selling their personal items that they no longer need. They usually have the best prices, and are easy to bargain with.

The thing about Kobeys, is the more often you go, the better you become at spotting the best deals quickly. I usually get there very early, and move through it very quickly on my first pass around, trying to get to as many one-time vendors as quickly as possible, and skipping past the regular vendors. Then I'll take my time on my second pass, and spend more time at each vendor.

    Hi again RD5050.

I completely and totally forgot to go!! I can't believe I did that! I so wanted to go.

Next Sunday I guess. I've been real busy trying to get my wireless security evaluation service off the ground. It's a new business and I have had to sharpen my computer skills and otherwise train myself in a lot of stuff. Window cleaning just didn't work out.

On top of that a real good friend of mine is talking about me joining him in what appears to be a tremendous business venture that may eventually involve me travelling all over the world. It's a bit early to tell...but my mind and heart were rather sidetracked in thinking about what he was suggesting to me.

The above is also why I haven't written much here lately.

Anyway thanks again RD5050. It's great to know the USB type wifi dongle I am looking for is available so cheaply there. I will try and stop by there as soon as I can!

Oh...someone else I know talked of us going into business together to do precisely what you mentioned. Buying out storage lockers and selling their contents at swap meets. He's got the money to buy them out and I have the brains....LOL. Just kidding. He's actually a very smart fellow. But I have time he doesn't. So it might make for a good mix.

But I think I am going to focus on offering wireless security evaluation for now and see how that goes.

Thanks again for the input RD5050! Much appreciated.
