Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Case's Vacation Journal: Good Food To Be Had....

Posted 02-17-2015 at 03:54 PM by case44

....with more still to come. It had been a long time coming for me to try a Central Texas legend in steak. So, last night, your writer decided it had become time to try out Heitmiller's.

While this will not be a formal food review post, I can tell you that this place gets an A-plus for its food. The steak was at its charbroiled best, full of flavor. Had a ribeye, and it was just the right amount of marbling. Also a wonderful baked potato which had bacon bits, and pinto beans with a few onions and peppers for a nice southwestern touch. The rolls were good, and the wait staff brings out both regular spread butter and a special whipped version of cinnamon butter. Really good.

In addition, the appetizer was pretty good, too, and one that I don't see very much but is always worth a taste, and that is the platter of calf fries. They're really good by themselves, but do try them with the cream gravy.

So, again, A-plus is the score for Heitmiller's and this guy will be back first chance he gets. Waco's been wonderful so far, the weather is getting better (sunny today after a dreary and cold Monday), and, would you believe I'm actually going to have Cajun seafood on Fat Tuesday? Yep. Today happens to be Fat Tuesday, and Buzzard Billy's is my next stop. Maybe they'll give me some beads for my neck like Pappadeaux did last year. See you in a few miles.

Buzzard Billy's was decent, but not real great. Good blackened catfish and hush puppies. Seafood gumbo was thick, but had pretty good flavor. Their jambalaya tasted too much like Spanish rice; you really should not put diced tomatoes in it. They had the other ingredients just fine, but it's just too Spanish to be Cajun.

Now in College Station and having had barbecue at J Cody's last night. Ribs and brisket were pretty good, with fine pinto beans. Potato salad (mayo with some unusual spices) was just okay. Will try out Butler's for soul food at lunch, and then back to J Cody's for a great steak.

And --- wouldn't you know? --- Lockhart's Kreuz Market has expanded and branched out to a new location in Bryan, right next to my hotel. Who'da thunk it? Looks like J Cody's is going to have some serious competition on the barbecue side.
