San Diego County charity Big Brothers Big Sisters awarded financial advisor Jason Groth as Big Brother of the Year. This organization helps children by providing them mentors so they can reach their full potential. Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has branches throughout the United States and holds a congressional charter. In San Diego County, tens of thousands of children grow up without a mentor, and this organization chapter aims to fill this need among youth who are at-risk due to a lack of proper guidance.

A Background of the Organization

Big Brothers Big Sisters was founded in 1902 by Ernest Coulter, a New York court clerk. In 1904, with the help of 39 volunteers who committed to each helping one boy, he officially named his organization Big Brothers. In 1914, he named his organization Big Brothers Big Sisters, since he understood that there were many young girls who also needed mentorship through his organization. In 1916, due to the success of the group, it had expanded to 96 cities.

In 1923, the organization embarked on a mission to help African Americans in Louisville, KY. The same year, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr. became Treasurer of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Federation, and Paramount Pictures released a movie based on the organization. In 1948, Norman Rockwell created an artwork that became a symbol of the Big Brothers Association.

In 1984, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America was headquartered in Philadelphia. In 1988, Big Brothers Big Sisters International was established, giving children in other countries the opportunity to benefit from the mission of this organization.

In 2003, recognizing the importance of mentoring for the development of the nation's youth, president George W. Bush earmarked $450 million over a three-year period with a similar mission to assist at-risk youth throughout the nation.

Forbes has ranked Big Brothers Big Sisters of America as one of the top 10 charities in the nation. The organization has been widely recognized for the positive outcomes for countless youths through its mentorship programs.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego Awards Jason Groth

Though Jason Groth has been a successful wealth advisor serving investors and businesses, being awarded Big Brother of the Year in San Diego County in 2010 has been a crowning achievement for him. He believes that just as society provides for our needs, there are times when we must give back and contribute to the community. After all, children are our future, and without investing in them, our society as we know it will not function.

In San Diego, mentors play a significant role in leading children on the right path to adulthood, and can influence their decision to attend college. 67 percent former littles surveyed said that their mentorship played a crucial role in their decision to attend college. Having a mentor can also help children develop self-esteem, confidence, and a strong identity.
