Is Wyoming Right for Me?

High elevation means lots of snow but with the Wind River range being close wind is less an issue. The Wind River is magnificent. Tons of hiking and fishing and skiing in the winter. Quite a few mini ranches are being built in the area called Cora, just a few miles from Pinedale. That's an area we considered.

Heading south towards Rock Springs and away from the Wind River, I was shocked at the wind and how quickly everything became brown. That said, if you find yourself in Farson go to the Mercantile for good ice cream.

Next we stayed in Laramie. We liked parts of it. We were mainly there to check out the university. The further away from downtown we went the nicer the neighborhoods got. The Medicine Bow is nearby and it's magnificent, especially the Snowy Range. About 20 minutes outside of Laramie is a very small town called Centennial. It's right up against the Medicine Bow N.F. Skiing is nearby and there is land to be had.

Next we hit Casper. Hated it. It's like a hot, brown, wind swept island in the middle of a sea of brown. Good BBQ though at HQ Southern BBQ.
Then we stayed in Buffalo. Loved Buffalo. Right near the Big Horn mountains. Plenty of land, nice neighborhoods, and a real hospital. Buffalo is a place we're considering.

We briefly stopped in Sheridan and went to King Saddelry to check out their western museum. We were bummed we couldn't check it out more because there's a lot to see in Sheridan. Again, it's right near the Bighorns.

Then we went into Billings, Montana. Hated it.

But all along I-90 are these little towns that you might want to check out for retirement and land. Almost every town in western Montana has a mountain view. The towns of Columbus, Townsend, Three Forks, Philipsburg, Anaconda, and Butte are places we checked out. We really liked the Philipsburg area. While talking with a business owner he told me Butte had really cheap land. But there's land for sale everywhere in Montana.

Both Billings and Missoula have proper airports.
Thanks for all the great advice. I will definately start looking at those areas!
