(Relection Campaign) Unemployment Drops to 8.4% - Fake NYT headline on Subject

Posted 09-05-2020 at 07:58 PM by jbgusa

The New York Times headline reads Job Growth Slackens, Signaling Vulnerability of Recovery (link). The earlier print headline had been "Job Gains shrink, Showing Frailty of US Recovery." The article's opening (online) text reads "Unemployment fell to 8.4% in August, but the gain of 1.4 million jobs was the weakest in months. The end of federal aid programs is casting a shadow." In the print edition to new, lower unemployment rate is buried. Maybe the earlier more distorted print edition was too much even for the Times. The article does not mention that this unemployment rate is down from 14.7% in April. Thus, about half of the increase in unemployment has melted away despite the continuing pandemic.

This, in my mind, is the definition of "fake news."
