Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

UT Wasted No Time Making Change --- A Bit Abruptly

Posted 01-04-2021 at 09:48 AM by case44

Some of you may have been as shocked as I was when it was announced that Tom Herman would no longer be the head football coach at the University of Texas. Maybe Longhorns Athletic Director Chris Del Conte had become convinced that Herman just could not beat the Oklahoma Sooners.

So, instead of giving Herman one more season with, admittedly, a great group of returning players, Del Conte just cut him loose. Never mind that great and convincing Alamo Bowl victory over the Colorado Buffs. Never mind that a new quarterback is emerging to replace Sam Ehlinger, who has subsequently decided to enter the NFL draft class. Tom Herman is out at Texas. I thought the move was abrupt, and I was taken aback by that same move, considering Del Conte insisted earlier that Herman is his coach. Well, not anymore. And in comes Steve Sarkisian, who has had a great success story of overcoming adversity to achieve his own professional success. He is an offensive guru, and where better than Alabama to put that offensive mind to good work? Sarkisian develops quarterbacks and has had success with it. Now, he takes his act to a school that he sez he's had lots of respect for. He understands the history of the Longhorns. In fact, he was on the opposing side the last time Texas won a national title.

A lot of people have had different opinions about him, and they've all been mixed. I am going to be optimistic about Steve Sarkisian. He's going to have an explosive group of returning players, probably the best group I've seen since Mack Brown strolled the UT sidelines. And they've got a decent-to-good recruiting class that, hopefully, will see a few more good players come to light. Burnt orange will once again rise to the top of the Big 12 conference and overtake OU. It will only be a matter of time before Austin will see national championship hopes once again.

While Tom Herman will be missed (I didn't think he was that bad), Steve Sarkisian will do a great job as the Horns' head coach. And out of all the stops he's made, this will be his biggest achievement by far.

Texas beat OU in 2018, so that was the only time Tom Herman was able to beat the Sooners.
