Welcome To Case's Column
Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken.
Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.
In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

The Snow Is Falling --- And Case Can't Travel This Week

This was what I alluded to in my most recent Scattershooting, but as I looked at the weather forecasts for this week to come, it became apparent that whatever plans I had were just not going to happen.
We've got snow falling in North Texas. We've got the coldest temperatures in the last few years. Projected temps, speaking of, are going to dip down into the single digits the next two nights. You don't see that in Dallas in a typical year. Such is rarely the case. But my travel plans for the week......
Nacogdoches? Scratch that.
Texarkana on Wednesday after Nac? Not happening.
Alternate plan in case Wednesday's forecast wouldn't come true: Marble Falls and the Hill Country? Uh, nope.
The roads as they'll be will just be treacherous to go out on. Forget any idea of interstate travel or any other highway. It's not happening.
Just as well. Look at it this way: At least, I don't have to worry about my commute to work this week. Let them deal with things.
In preparation for what may become an epic winter event, Ol' Case piled up on groceries and will put the crockpot on overdrive in the coming days. Right now, I've got chicken and dumplings going. Later in the week, I'll do my own version of pot roast. In the freezer are some quail medallions, lasagna, and chicken pot pie. I'll have bacon, sausage, pancakes, biscuits, potatoes O'Brien, and oatmeal for breakfusses around the kitchen. All in all, Case is covered.
Now, the other challenge is this: How to keep my central heating usage at a minimum and save costs. It will only have the makings of the biggest bill of the winter and the year. Hopefully, I'll make it work.
Case will get back to the road as soon as possible. A new car is imminent, and that will lend itself to some new places and some old ones I haven't been to in a while. Vacation for now will have to settle on watching snow fall.

We've had power outages where I live and all over Texas the past few days. I'm back for now, but rolling outages are still in progress, at least through Friday.
ERCOT is to blame for all of this. Our power grid needs more capacity.Posted 02-18-2021 at 05:34 AM by case44

My vacation time is, for the time being, getting salvaged by slightly warmer temperatures and no new power outages like I've had earlier this week. I'll somehow work in all the groceries (if not most of them) in meals before the weekend is over. The way it's looking, I'll make some plans for breakfast out in the morning at one of my favorite places (provided their power is back on and going), and maybe two short road trips, one each on Saturday and Sunday. Vacation has been salvaged, thanks in no small part to fast thawing and consistent electricity. Weather is way better now and all power is back on and has been since Wednesday night. Things have improved so much that I'll just head for a favorite catfish spot (McGehee's) near Marietta, OK as roads have vastly gotten better due to higher temperatures and thawing.Posted 02-20-2021 at 11:34 AM by case44

It's good to see Starbucks opening again in D/FW. They've been closed all week due to no power. They're up and running now in most locations and cars are in line in the Drive-Thru. Very good sign. Ditto with Chick-Fil-A, Whataburger, and McDonald's as power is back and water is doing fine.
Where the problems still are, regarding water contamination, is in Denton. They've got the boil water thing going, so many restaurants and gas stations cannot serve hot coffee or iced tea, nor can anyone be able to wash their hands at this time. I discovered that at the Buc-ee's location today, so that limits some purchases for now. Hopefully, the city will have the water corrected soon enough.Posted 02-20-2021 at 11:38 AM by case44
