Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

East Side, West Side --- A Texas ISD's Drastic Altering

I amaze myself sometimes with an uncanny ability to stumble across unexpected things. Over the weekend, I was looking something up on Google for something in Wichita Falls, Texas. While that was happening, I stumbled into some words thrown in from other people's searches, and one of those read "new high school". Upon seeing that, I thought, "Hey, this is interesting. Maybe I should check it out."

Now, Wichita Falls hasn't really done a lot of big-time growing in recent years, at least, not to the extent that I hoped they would. Even though that city is stuck with a population with more than 104,000 residents, they still have achieved the highest total in the history of the burg. The difference between now and the 2010 census is only about 486 people. So, that did seem odd that a new high school would be built when they had three public high schools already.

What is the deal?

Well, many campuses in The Falls are aging, some quite hard. Wichita Falls High (aka Old High to the locals) is the oldest campus, having opened in 1922. Two others, Rider and Hirschi, opened in the 1960s. You won't believe what will be in the offing for this community. The Wichita Falls Independent School District is going to close one campus and repurpose two others. In essence, they will effectively retire all three high schools in their current state. Wichita Falls High will close for good, and Rider and Hirschi will be converted into middle schools. There will then be two new, state-of-the-art high school campuses to be built, one on the far east side of town, and the other in the far west. Sizes of both schools will be larger than those in the three current campi. Both are said to be getting new names. If the name submissions I saw recently are any indication, it's anyone's guess as to the names of the schools. There are a few good ideas, but of the lists for each location, they actually included East and West. The likelihood is, that's what WFISD personnel may end up going with, as they said they didn't want to use people's names to name a school this time around. So, it may become an East Side, West Side situation. Colors will eventually be decided, along with the mascots.

And the date of opening?

Amazing how I haven't already gotten to it. It's expected both schools will be opening in the fall of 2024. Those of you who still want to get your fix of the now and the way it used to be, then you'd best savor these moments now. Old High, Rider, and Hirschi will be riding off into the sunset with the '23-'24 school year. Talk about big-time change. Fallsites will have plenty to get used to when we get to that fork.

The new names have been revealed. Legacy will be the east side high school, and Memorial will be the west side high school. This will take time to digest.

But to avoid potential controversy, they need to give their football stadium a new name. It's called Memorial Stadium....
