Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Baseball Life Is Good Once Again

If nothing else, we're almost all the way back from a very unfortunate virus which shut the entire world down for a time. Baseball has made a nice comeback this season. While many players are far from perfect, healthwise, the game is back and so, too, are the fans.

At least six major league clubs have actually achieved two million fans going through the turnstiles. That's actually pretty impressive, considering people were apprehensive last spring, but now, much of the fear of gathering with fans has subsided. The regular season is almost over as of this writing, and this promises to be an exciting playoff year. Besides my Houston Astros clinching a playoff berth and home-field advantage, that National League Wild Card game will garner lots of attention. It's the St Louis Cardinals against either the San Francisco Giants or the Los Angeles Dodgers as of this computer chickenscratch. I'd love nothing more than to see the Dodgers eliminated in a one-game Wild Card loss to the Cards. Hey, they got their title last year; plus, their fan base has a bunch of crybabies who can't let go of the past. As it is, Americans just want a return to normal, where we can go anywhere and see good baseball played on fields all across America.

Nonetheless, great baseball has been played all year, and there is even more to come. What we call 'the second season' is about to unfold. This will be fun.

Playoff baseball will be lots of fun. If the Astros are going to achieve success this time around, then it will have to be with their offense. I'm sorry, folks, but the starting pitching has been suspect recently. They won't have the luxuries of Justin Verlander or Gerrit Cole like they had in '19, and Zack Greinke is not going to be 100 percent. In addition, Jake Odorizzi has been a big disappointment for them after much had been expected. So, it's basically Lance McCullers, Luis Garcia, Framber Valdez, and Jose Urquidy. They will need lights out performances from their relief corps, but it's the offense that will need to outscore their opponents every night if Houston intends to get another world title.

And y'all remember what I said about Jake Meyers in my last Scattershooting?? He's getting hot with the bat now, so this could be a difference-maker.
