Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Irritating Misspellings And A Thing About Invoices

Posted 07-07-2022 at 08:24 PM by case44

It's really hard to put into words unless you take screenshots of things at work and save them for a Case expose` on the crazy things one experiences. Since I can't really bring work-related stuff home, I'll just do my best to describe it here.

What is up with some people and how they print invoices? My job is making sure imported goods get into the country through Customs in a timely fashion. Every day at work, I operate from a computer. While commodities are coming into the United States, your writer must look at a commercial invoice on each business which gets such goods classified for passage. As this process happens, I look at how different and diverse many businesses are. People can be as strange as they are professional. In some businesses, people show that they don't have good English skills. This includes some people who (supposedly) actually speak English and are capable of doing it better. I thought businesses had to have a professional look, and that includes the making of company invoices when it comes time for transactions.

Oftentimes, you will see the words commercial invoice placed on the actual invoice to be used for any company transaction. But in some places, you'd be amazed that some printed invoices don't look as professional or as intelligent or as polished as one might expect. Spelling errors can be frequent in some businesses.

One invoice I spotted this week had a spelling very much like the following:

Commerical invioce

Argh!! How in the fudge do these businesses stay in business? It doesn't end there, as I've also seen company disclaimers or shipping details or other types of entry with some gross errors. Sometimes, mistakes can be unintentional, like the misspelling of company names or the city and street names. Careless errors can be avoided if people would just check their work before finalizing it. Sloppy invoices are not going to impress clients; some might just turn away.

It's best to make the righ t choises and do yer best if yew wont to put invoyces together with korekt speling an mayk yer biznes loo k betr.

Sorry. But you get the drift.

There's always the "It's not a big deal... You should worry about more important things... You still know what the message is..." defense when issues like this are called out.

I'm tired of people not giving a crap about anything. This may be small in comparison to other matters going on, but they all contribute to the general decay.
