What is it with my kids? They say and do some of the darndest things. My youngest daughter especially. I'm telling you, the girl lives in her own world. And it's a very special and happy world.

The syrup in the bellybutton is the most recent event. It started with breakfast and waffles. She was wearing her bathing suit. She's one of those kids who can't eat anything without wearing it. She gets it from her father. I'm afraid that he is the same way. When she discovered that there was syrup in her bellybutton, you would think that she would instinctively go wash it out. But, oh no! Not this child. It is much funner to show everyone how you can make your bellybutton stick together and almost disappear. Of course, this meant that all the other children had to try do the same thing and when they couldn't, that was when she proudly proclaimed, "I have syrup in my bellybutton and I like it." Yep, she's a special one. Then there's another recent event when the oldest girl was having a sleep-over and the kids were playing charades. Someone had made a guess at what the answer was, the person who was "it" said, "no, but you all just keep hollering out." Well, that was when the cute, young one decided to "holler out". No, not any words, just a nice, cute "aaahhhhh!". It was really quite funny, but I had to explain to her that was not what they meant.

I have a mommy gripe. I'm sure it's not just me. I'm sure that it's every mom. But why? My kids ALWAYS need ME! Dad can be home, standing right in the kitchen and the kids will seek me out and ask me to get them a glass of water. They are helpless and they must also think that their dad is. Here's one of my favorites...."Mom! I'm all done and my butt needs wiped!" When will this stop? OK, I know the answer...when they learn to do it for themselves. And according to the track record, I've got about two more years with the youngest. But why is it that I never hear, "dad, I'm all done and...."?

My little princess...

I have to believe that raising kids is the hardest job out there. Give me lion taming, snake charming, sewer inspector, whatever! It's just got to be easier than taming a child. Oops, I mean, raising a child.

My sweet, darling, little girl, you know, the one with syrup in her belly-button, the same one who believes that girls don't mow yards, well, here it is her first year in 'real' school and she has already refused to participate in Phys Ed. That's right. My 5 YO got a zero during her first course of PE! As I understand it, they were playing 'hoop scotch' and she just didn't want to play. It seems that the coach tried to explain to her that 'everyone' had to play and she just wasn't buying it. I'm not sure why I'm so surprised though. This is the same child that while on a road trip at the very young and innocent age of 3, informed her older brother, "If I don't play, it's not a game".

Where do they get it from? Now, I'm the kind of mom who wants my kids to be independent. I love that my oldest daughter wears knee socks and shorts and that she could care less if she looks 'different' than the rest of the girls. They are leaders, my kids. At least most of them...but not my beautiful, little princess. You would never catch her in knee socks. So, what is it with this defiant streak? And what is a mother supposed to do? I really don't want to raise conformists, so should I put my foot down when the refuses to participate in kindergarten PE? I've asked her "why?". I thought maybe it was because she had worn a dress that day or maybe she thought she couldn't do it and she would get laughed at. NO! She just didn't want to.

The coach spoke to her teacher, who had to speak to me. I spoke to the little resistant child and also her father. Know what he said? He said she gets it from me. Now what do I do?

What!? No potential for a future Olympian in little G?

(Looks like another one ya gotta send to New England, Weather!) We'll freeze the "love of Phys. Ed" right into that dear, sweet child! She'll be competing in downhill skiing before ya know it!

P.S. Auntie June loves you "Little G!"

Raising children definitely is the most under paid, undera ppreciated job in the world. (But it's not a job if you love what you're doing.)

There are times that your child needs to participate and learn...math, science, driving, etc. Maybe practice at home first. My son didn't want to play t-ball with his friends. I got him a little t-ball stand and at first he didn't want it, but I think he didn't want to look bad. After he practiced a little bit, his confidence grew and he was able to play.

If it's just to be resistant, what do you do when you introduce a new food that they say they don't like? I don't give my kids a choice and they have to try everything before they can leave the table. There is usually one or two times with each child that they will sit there for over an hour, but they eventually cave and eat because they want to play. I feel that this rule helps them with other stuff that they need to do, but don't want to do...like school stuff.
    Good Luck!
