the island of Terceira and 1st kisses

Thinking of Anne's 1st kiss reminds me of my own. (The time in 5th grade didn't count, when a boy tried to kiss me and got a mouth full of hair because I hadn't noticed his efforts and turned my head at the wrong time.) My 1st real kiss occurred on a small island in the Azores, off the coast of Portugal, when I was 12 years old. My father was in the Air Force and we'd recently moved from upstate NY to lush green Terceira.

Picture green pastures squared off by low rock walls, sprinkled with cows. Orange tiled roofs and not very many cars. Plenty of donkey driven carts. The women did their laundry along the sides of the streets. I don't quite know how to describe those wash areas with built in rungs... And the best bread I ever tasted, a sweet bread, was sold door to door. I wish I had that recipe...

And the freest (is that a word?) horseback ride I ever went on was on that island. $1 for one hour. And you could go wherever you wanted. Without any supervision. As long as you were back in an hour. We lived off-base, only a few minutes walk to the rocky coast. I loved it. Not as busy as the states, a slower paced kind of life.

The home we rented was attached to our landlord's home. It was roomy and colorfully painted. Pastel colors. And there were large windows you could lean out of when they had bullfights or parades out on the street. They had a baby bull in the yard and pigs we gave our leftovers too. I was sad to discover what happened to the pigs eventually... sausage and all. (My entire family helped out with that, while I hid in the house.)

One day, the landlord's daughter, (I remember how to say her name, but never knew how to spell it... sounds like Co-say-san) told me 2 boys in the area liked me, and I had to decide between them. Very matter of fact like. (She spoke the best English among all our friends. We were learning Portugese in school too, so overall we communicated pretty well.)

It never dawned on me that I could turn them both down if I wanted to, so I chose Emanuel, who happened to be her brother. He was older than me, and I thought he was mysterious and handsome... the quiet sort.

He had dark hair and a beautiful smile. He was strong, probably because he did construction work. He was only 15, and no longer in school. They grow up fast on that island I think.

Sometime after, I was walking outside with a friend. It was evening, not much light out. Suddenly small rocks started coming at us from nowhere. We ran for our lives. I later learned there were 2 culprits, the boy I had turned down in favor of Emanuel, and a loyal comrade I suppose, bent on revenge. (No one told me my life might be in danger depending on my decision.) Obviously (I thought proudly to myself later on) I chose the right boy. Not the rock throwing fiend.

The only rocks Emanuel ever threw were at my window, to get my attention when he hoped I could meet him outside. It was the coolest thing. The sound of those little pings hitting my window... Much better than a telephone. I'm sure I waited for that sound a lot.

He would hold my hand and we'd walk down to the ocean. Sit on those rock walls and talk in our broken Portugese and English. And that's where I learned how nice a kiss was. (I won't go into any details on that... )

So, Emanuel of Terceira was my very 1st real kiss. I wonder how he is now, and hope life is good for him.

I have to say though that the best kiss I ever had came from my husband, the night he asked me to marry him... but that's another story...

So anyway, if you care to share... who was your first kiss?

Oh, that is too cute, the kindergarten kiss. (I think that counts.)
I've heard chocolate (to aide breakouts) and braces are a viable option to ward off that first-kiss encounter, for awhile at least.
I know, I'm hoping my just turned 10yr old is a long ways off from kissing. (Funny how our perspective changes once we're parents.)
For now, I'm just trying my best to teach him how to respect girls. I've seen him open doors for girls at the school when I drop him off (way to go son!) and scramble to help a girl when she fell... he also has an appointment with an orthodontist in August and I anticipate he'll be in braces for awhile...

That is such a sweet story!
My first kiss was my husband... believe it our not... We were best buddies for a while(several years) before we became romantically involved... We used to go on walks through the woods on his parent's acreage in Oregon(foothills of the cascades outside of Silverton) and at night we would lay down and stare at the stars together... He was quite the gentleman... and then we only could see each other during the summer's cause he lived in Louisiana at the time... But his parents owned the property my parents rented a place on, as well as property right next door... But we kept in contact very well long distance.

We held hands a lot but did not kiss... We were kind of old fashioned as well as shy and we believed at the time if we weren't going to get married we didn't want to be kissing someone else's spouse haha. I really admired that in him and he did in me also... But we didn't look down on others that chose to, just was something we did...

So my first kiss was at a beach on the Oregon Coast where my husband proposed to me I was 19 at the time

Thanks for sharing that kristynwy. I love to hear "how we met" stories. It's neat you were friends for so long.

My husband's 1st kiss was the night he asked me to marry him. And that did mean a lot to me. I was 21 and he was 23. (And then he was a crazy kissing maniac from that point on... )

I have to admit I don't regret the other kisses I had in my life though. I'm just grateful I waited when it came to the important stuff...

First kiss was @ the age of 12 with a boy named Michael. It was unexpected and I must admit a bit awkward but then again all first kisses are awkward. But I would like to think my first real kiss happened on my wedding day!
