My old Fleece Jacket

Posted 09-23-2008 at 06:44 PM by Miss Blue

Do you have a favorite article of clothing? Something worn, familiar, comfortable and as full of memories as an old diary?

I have my old fleece jacket..It is white with Indian designs around the bottom..It once belonged to one of my daughters who handed it down to me..The jacket is large to suit her pregnancy when she purchased it..I remember when she wore it to the hospital to give birth to one of my precious grandsons nearly 17 years ago..
Later that winter, as she lost weight, it made a perfect snuggle place to hold the baby close to the warmth of her body one day when her car was stranded by piled snow and she walked the last several hundred feet up our steep driveway..
Many times that winter I would walk into the hospital room and find her using the fleece jacket for a pillow as she sat dozing in a chair beside the baby's bed where he spent so much time his first three years with asthma..

Years ago she left the jacket at my house, because she had a brand new coat that fit her.."Mom you can have this old thing to wear out to feed the horse or shovel the driveway this winter"..
So the fleece jacket became mine and I added warm memories over the years as it was washed many times and worn around home all those many cold months..It hangs on a key rack beside the door leading to the back deck where I have my first cup of coffee most mornings..I wrap myself in its familiar warm memories and greet the day alone with thoughts of my creator as I watch and listen to the sounds and sights of nature prepare herself in the early dawn for another glorious day..I smile at the deer on the old trail on the mountain before me as she makes her way each morning to the creek to drink.
As the song says "It is well with my Soul"..and I hang the fleece jacket once more on the keyrack by the door and am ready to face the day..

Wow, what a lot of memories in that fleece jacket. I sure enjoyed reading that.

I have a few things from my grandma that I stick my nose into so I can smell that nice smell of hers. I hope the smell stays a long time. I miss her greatly.

I guess I'm not the only one with a beloved sweater. I have my Dad's. I wear it proudly, although it is obviously a man's sweater, and too large for me. It's blue with leather elbow patches...and it, too has that "special" kind of warmth.

    Thanks blue...

THAT WAS SWEET. I Hace a plaid shirt with a quilted llining. It was my husbands, who died in 2001 (before 9/11), It makes me think of a lot o goodtimes we had. I do not dwell on badtimes. I tried to give it to my son once but he didn't take it. Now I am glad he didn't.
