Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

A Tale Of Two Coaches: They Used To Be The Wave Of The Future

Wouldn't you just know it?

If you were to ask The Case if Mark Adams and Chris Beard would both be fired from Texas Tech and the University of Texas, respectively, in the same year, I would have asked you, "What weed have you been smoking?" After all, both coaches had been well-respected in the world of college basketball and had some success, and as such, were rewarded with long contracts from their current schools.

And, yet, here we are today on Case's Column, and the thing that we never would have imagined happening had just happened. Adams, Tech's longtime staple and head men's basketball coach with tons of potential to bring greatness to the school to make fans forget about, ironically, Beard (who I'll get to in a moment), is now gone. He stepped down after he "stepped in it". He apparently had offended a snowflake player and, even more apparently, other snowflakes at Tech by quoting Scripture during a speech given to that same player. The powers that be hated that, and so, they suspended him. A few days later, Adams decided to leave his post.

Which brings us to Beard, the guy that Mark Adams replaced at Tech but, until recently, had been the wave of the future for Texas Longhorn men's basketball. You know what he did while at Tech, and had he stayed there, he probably would have continued the prominence there by taking them further to a championship than any other coach they'd had (including his once-mentor, Bob Knight). Once he moved to Austin, he was going to be the guy to bring Texas to full prominence in NCAA men's hoops. That was, until an off-campus incident which included domestic violence, a very unusual situation long since dismissed by his fiancee. Still, the damage by whatever happened is done, and Chris Beard is no longer at Texas. He's now rumored to be the next Ole Miss head coach.

Unbe -- effing -- lievable.

In the meantime, two programs, the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Texas Longhorns, are suddenly and once again picking up the pieces and starting over again. And that's just when it looked like, six months ago, both schools had solid futures with two proven coaches who could have achieved big things for their campuses.

Wouldn't you just know it? Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Adams should maybe do instructional videos for his no-middle defense. Just a hunch, but I think that the stress got to him after the great first season, in ways that haven’t been publicized.

I like the search committee for Tech, which includes former Tech center Norense Odiase, Joey McGuire, the lead, namesake donor for the Dustin Womble Basketball Center, and Hocutt.

UT could go with Coach Terry, or someone else.
