Welcome to KC!
There are several recent threads similar to yours that talk about the various areas.
You are smart to rent for a while before committing. Different areas have a different feel to them and you'll want to explore your options because you will have many.
Plenty of options within an easy commute. Plenty of cultural diversity - even in the burbs!
I live on the Kansas side and so I am biased toward that area. Others will chime in about other areas, I'm sure.
If schools are a top priority, you will want to look into the Johnson County area. You may not choose it, but it's worth your time to check out.
I posted this recently in another thread: Shawnee Mission and Blue Valley schools rank among the best public schools in the country. People who could easily afford a premium private school opt to send their kids to SM or BV schools. They are that good. We recently switched districts and I continue to be amazed and impressed.
You will find all ranges of housing in the area from small starter homes to multi $mil mansions.
The options in KC are endless, so take your time.
Best of luck to you in the move!!
