I had a similar eye-opening experience when I lived in the area.
Up in E WA/N ID, people treat you like you are a person, not a color or ethnicity. The same cannot be said for the supposed more "diverse", "accepting", "liberal" big cities, where your background is unwillingly worn like a label on your shirt, and where judgments come accordingly.
I never felt so free to live as just a "person" in my life. It's much easier to accept oneself when the labels aren't worn or placed on you.
