Speaking to several issues:
1. 2006 was USPS's biggest year ever. #2 was '07 and #3 was '05. Its a LONG way from obsolete.
2. I've lived on ranches so far out in the boonies that mail was only delivered three days a week (that is, the local POs already do a lot to control costs). I still got mail delivered to the yard, though, just because of how the routes were set.
Our current box is a half mile from the house.
3. There are two types of rural delivery systems. Rural routes (RR) are direct employees of the PO. Highway contracts (HC) are independant contractors.
4. I'm an eBay PowerSeller. I spend thousands on postage every year at USPS. Literally.
First, my nearest UPS/FedEx drops are 35 miles away and secondly because they're quite a bit more expensive for what I ship.
I would venture to guess an easy 75% of ebay sellers use USPS because its the affordable option.
5. I have yet to live anywhere that UPS wont deliver, but its quite common for FedEx to put parcels in the postal system for the "last leg" as has beenv mentioned
