Whole Foods and WalMart are some pretty hip-and-happenin' places, dontcha know...True. Which is why Northville, like someone else has suggested, sounds perfect for OP.I actually didn't mean sophistication as related to people. I do like Midwesterners, even though I find the neutrality hard to read at times. Honestly, my main reference was to cuisine - although Detroit and Ann Arbor have their fair share of restaurants that can give L.A. and New York a run for their money. They are just not as prevalent, that's all.
A lot of the Detroit area's best restaurants and bakeries are in non-sexy, non-trendy, older suburbs like Center Line, Madison Heights, Hazel Park, and Dearborn Heights.

For instance

Green Lantern Pizza, Madison Heights

Satay House (Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine), Madison Heights

Mexican Fiesta, Dearborn Heights

Jamaican Pot, West 8 Mile Detroit

In addition, concerning walkability, the Detroit Area has many walkable nodes, from Plymouth to Grosse Pointe to Hamtown to Wyandotte to Birmingham. While Ann Arbor does have a phenomenal downtown/university area and adjacent Kerrytown, but outside of those two adjacent areas, Ann Arbor is not that walkable.
