Perhaps hero is not the right word, we don't have a large lexicon for this in English, so I don't know, but he did sacrifice for our country, on our behalf. We have a term for this in my religious tradition: it is something akin to white martyrdom, for his country.
He served his constituents and they returned him to office several times, they have the last word on whether he was a good senator.
I didn't agree with a lot of his politics, but he was a gentleman and able to work across the aisle at times for the common good. He represents the party of the past, Trump represents the party of the future. God help us ...
