Pew Research provides data on atheists. Regarding bold above "what atheists do and do not understand." This from Dec. 2023 on atheists in USA:
- 22% of atheists (and 64% of agnostics) believe there is some higher power or spiritual force
- 17 % of atheists (and 43% of agnostics) regardless of whether they believe in God or a higher power, believe there are spirits or unseen spiritual forces
- 24% of atheists (and 61% of agnostics) acknowledge that there is something spiritual beyond the natural world
- 18 % of atheists (and 36% of agnostics) have had a sudden unexpected feeling of connection with something from beyond this world
