I realize a lot of current events can be appropriately categorized under a city's forum, or in the politics forum...but I think it would be nice to have a politics-free current events forum where we could discuss news stories like this one:

Teen says pink toy ovens discourage boys from kitchen play - CNN.com

I posted about it here today and put it in the shopping forum because I couldn't think of anywhere more appropriate for it, but I think a current events forum would have been perfect.

I'm so glad that this is in the "Planning Stages", I asked one of the Senior mods about this a little while ago as well.

Not crazy about the idea.

I'd rather discuss local news with the local folks. In my experience, without the local context provided by local posters, the discussions quickly veer toward sensationalism and eventually posters advance to broad brush swipes against the entire area.

"Well what do you expect? The entire state is filled with people like that!"

"I could have told you without opening the thread that this happened in Anytown. Those people are wacky."

Current events section would be interesting but its going to be impossible to keep the political content/innuendo out of that kind of section, it will definitely keep a mod very busy..
You could run that kind of section on a probationary time frame say 1 month to see if it will become more trouble than its worth..
