Quick question, if you send someone a direct message, and they decide to copy what you have said into a thread, is that considered a violation or is messaging someone information, giving up your privacy rights to what you have written?

Any direct message i send some one is presumed to be between me and them and not open for public viewing. I would find it highly rude and offensive to see some one copy and paste a private message to open forum..

I always assume everyone can see everything I post on the internet and that it will live-on in perpetuity - that mindset prevents headaches and embarrassment.

Agreed.
Don't send DM's and assume they are private. Yes, the TOS rules weigh in on it, but if you truly want confidentiality, DM's are the wrong venue, for sure.

People are banned on other forums for even referring to a DM and
saying who said it.
They may be given a warning if it was a first offense.
I consider it serious.

I would say it is up to the person who wrote the DM. If you feel it violated your privacy, report it and it will be investigated by a mod and a Senior Mod. Mods cannot look at dm's to verify, only Senior Mods can do that.

When I said it depends, say I send a DM to somebody telling how to winterize their rv and in the middle of that long DM, there is a paragraph about a particular battery maintainer. If the person copied that paragraph and pasted it in their state forum asking, where can I find this maintainer, Tractor Supply doesn't carry it? Should that person be infracted? As long as they didn't indicate where they got the information, I wouldn't mind a bit.

But like I said, if you feel violated, by all means report it and a mod will take care of getting it to a senior mod.

I peeked at the TOS, and don't see where DM's are not to be shared.
Is it assumed as part of the "No Outing" line? Or, did I scan past it?

And the DM interface also has a "Forward" function button. How does Forwarding play into it?

Pretty much so. If you feel that your privacy (could be name, location, etc... anything that can be put together to figure out information about you) has been jeopardized, its part of outing you. Typically the reason a person sends a DM is because they are going to reveal information that they don't want to post for the general membership. They feel its more private.

By the way, the reason its not called Private Messaging is because dm's can be investigated for spam or even like right now, the op wants a DM investigated. So it can't be considered Private. Typically, dm's are not looked at, unless a situation like this arrives.

Not a big gripe, or anything, but that seems to be a bit obscure in the TOS.
Probably ought to be spelled out clearly, although I am certain TPTB have bigger fish to fry.
