There was a good discussion of the reasons for disabling negative rep at the time it was turned off at City-Data.

Trust me when I tell you that a hefty number of people abused the negative reputation system in the past. Being one of the forum's biggest loudmouths, I was chronically annoying markablue and other moderators to have pointless red dots expunged from my inventory. People would just assign you negative reputation because they disagreed with your opinions. It was quite juvenile, actually.

Question Rep points

Can someone answer this, please....is there any way to check who sent you rep points? I've gotten some very sweet ones, and I'd like to respond. But, is it correct to assume that if they don't type in their names, it's not possible to know who they are?

Scran..you had red dots, I'm flabbergasted, speechless!! Oh the horror!!!

Kidding aside you hit the nail on the head, you were not supposed to give neg reps just because you did not agree, thought the person was a moron etc etc..just move on already

That is correct seebee

Some times folks leave their name and others it is what I like to call "drive-by smiles"

Also if they just click the + sign at the bottom it doesn't give the option to leave a message or name
