How did he ruin Zimbabwe? He kicked out colonialist (or their descendants), has worked to get rid of a currency that was tied to colonialism (which is always going to result in high inflation) and is now on the road to recovery. The question that should be asked, is why don't more African leaders bite the bullet and throw off the colonial yoke as well? They tried in Cote D'ivore but those savage French played their little game in the background nicely. Hopefully someone in future will rise up and finish the job.

So in your mind, Wild Style, ruining Zimbabwe's economy, causing suffering for the vast majority of the nation's population (Mugabe has harmed many more blacks than whites), is worth being free of colonialists? By the way, Rhodesia (predecessor of Zimbabwe) declared its independence from Great Britain in 1965, when Rhodesia's government was all-white. They did this because Great Britain was in the process of decolonizing Africa and insisted colonies agree on majority rule before becoming independent. It was "recolonized" only briefly in 1978-9 (as Zimbabwe Rhodesia) as a stopgap measure for ending the civil war. This pro-Mugabe propaganda about him as a fearless fighter against Britain is crap!

In 2008 Zimbabwe reached an inflation rate of 355,000%!!! while the Zimbabwean dollar plummeted in value so much it was removed as the country's currency in 2009. Altho inflation has decreased to a more manageable level in the last 3 years it is back up again this year and productivity/growth have not reached the goals planned for this year so far. Former white farmers were forced off their lands and replaced by people who had no experience or interest in farming and consequently destroyed the agricultural base of the country which used to make up 40% of the country's GDP.

Way to go!

When you people get degrees in economics and then over night become Africans, then come back and talk to me. Until then, keep parroting what tv tells you, makes you sound like you know what your talking about, to other know nothings.

Would you like to live in Zimbabwe, Wild Style? I'll bet the average Zimbabwean will trade places with you in a New York minute!

The fact that 95% of the population was unemployed just 3 years ago, the hyper-inflation of the past 10 years, the country's ranking at #221 in the wordl for GDP per capita and the millions of dollars spent by the government on a pointless war in the Congo is not propaganda. Those are facts. Sorry they interfere with your fantasy world.

As I said, the economy is starting to grow again (6% in 2011) after years and years of fiscal mis-management BUT it is slow and will take a long time to recover thanks to the country's instability. Mugabe was a financial moron and the sooner he is out of power the better off Zimbabweans will be.

The truth is that Robert Mugabe is just another tribal strongman. If you are not a Shona, you are nothing!

Perhaps had the former Rhodesia government and dominate citizens given thought to establishing democratic institutions, the rule of law (and more importantly justice), and equality individuals like Robert Mugabe would have never arisen because there is no shortage of evidence that despotism when violently overthrown only leads to more despotism.

Rather incredible statement. The man has turned Zimbabwe into a pauper nation with large segments of the population fleeing to RSA and you can defend him.

He should be on criminal charges. Only because other leaders supported or neglected to condemn him due to his so called freedom fighter background could he prosper so long.
