It seems like we are always reading about savage Africans killing, torturing and persecuting gays and lesbians. Why don't they apply for asylum to escape? Surely, it's not like the African governments want them there. Is it that difficult for them to leave?

Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I think in order to be granted some sort of political asylum, they have to be political targets of the government. Not the population unless it's an outright genocide.

Yes, but it IS the governments that are maiming, torturing and murdering them.

You can't just give asylum to anyone who plays the victim card. There are standards that need to be met.

I would think that they meet these standards.

How can we give asylum to homosexuals in different countries when the majority of states in the US don't even acknowledge homosexual rights like gay marriage for example.

Gays from Russia apply for asylum and are granted it. That's because the US has a liberal immigration policy toward Russia and Eastern Europe. The US really isn't interested in more Black people, though. Nor more Latino people, who aren't wealthy. So the State Dept. considers refugees from those regions to be "economic refugees", only, and throws them back. There are HUGE double standards in immigration policy.

Jamaican gays have been granted asylum in Canada. Actually it's a new scam these days many 3rd world people claiming to be gay to claim asylum in Europe and Canada. Some try it here in the USA too not sure how successful though.

Sadly, I don't think the US accepts as many asylum cases as you suggested.
The article says that Jamaica tops Russia for the number of applicants and that the US only accepted 10 russians in 2010 and 8 in 2011. That's hardly a ringing endorsement for gay asylum. the article does say that the Russians tend to be well educated.
