Trevor: "I struggle with the idea that it's better to be enslaved."
Not sure where the controversy is in the post. Trevor acknowledges that things are probably more difficult in some ways today, but conditions are certainly better now than during apartheid. It's not much different than Slavery vs. Jim Crow in the United States. No former slave would want to go back to bondage, but there were some problems unique to Jim Crow that weren't issues in slavery.

Noah has also mentioned that while South Africa has had a very difficult history grappling with race, he has said that at least they're a lot more upfront and honest about it than Americans are, from his POV.

That is true, some vestiges of slavery are with us, but they are not always overt. One could say that voter restriction, redistricting, and school district apportionment are in this category, along with the idea of deserving versus undeserving poor, and "dog whistles" used to signal racist themes....

The black/coloured/Asian etc. groups total 91% of the population versus about 9% for whites. With a large majority of the people being previously oppressed, it makes sense that they're more upfront about race.
White (non-Hispanic) men alone are larger than the total number of blacks and Latinos in the U.S. Conversations about race won't go far here unless whites want to engage. The issue of course is that many whites perceive that they're under attack. It's really a class/wealth issue (rich whites vs poorer whites) but it ends up being turned into a race issue (black vs white).

This really isn't surprising, as many (mostly White) Americans are self-deluded or don't have a realistic perception about the state of racial relations in the USA...
