Yes, during my past transits, after the border closure, I had to pass through a third country, usually Djibouti. It was an unfortunate situation that I am glad (hope) has been put behind the countries. Ethiopia will benefit greatly from any relief of it's landlocked status.
I doubt if it will be much easier for casual travel. Vlsas remain problematic, and there have always been flights from other countries.
The only other reasonable priced flights I knew were from UAE. But the two times that I were in Ethiopia I had no desire to go through UAE to get to Asmara.

If it only weren't so difficult to get to with a visa and all. Asmara looks really interesting-- not what you would expect.
I hope this is the start of something! If Ethiopia and Eritrea get along at least as well as Indonesia does with East Timor, then that will go a long way!
