The problem is money. When I was in school we had a debate on capital punishment, so my info is years out of date - but back then it cost more to put a criminal to death then it did to sentence them to LWOP, and that was assuming the person lived 25 years or more. All the appeals and time spent on death row leading up to an execution cost the system far more then "three hots and a cot" for the rest of a person (even a young person's) natural life.
I don't want to change the system so people get fast tracked to execution because that would probably lead to a couple of "oops" we juiced the wrong guy sort of things, but with today's forensics and DNA testing that seems to be a thing of the past.
