Yes Birmingham is slightly more urban than Mobile they have a larger skyline but ours fit us fine for 600K and b-ham is nice for 1.2 million..We have our share of fine restaurants but B-ham has better shopping by a mile.Mobile and B-ham has two different vibes and culture. Our cultural amenities reflect our region and culture.B-ham`s cultural amenities reflect their region. You will just have to visit the two it all depends on what you want. The two are completely different.

Just as some one mentioned in a previous post it is like comparing Atlanta to New Orleans culturally. Both are southern with different vibes, urban fabric, and architecture....and oh yeah Mobile isn`t as gritty and dangerous as New Orleans but we have a lot of love for our younger but larger sibling over in Louisiana, lol.

People visit Mobile and love it! Atleast those are the reviews i've been hearing lately. I can't say the same about bham but thats a leadership problem and i wish our hilly city could get it's magic back.

I love the south, but I want a city that offers many young singles, more thsan beer joints and a few strip malls. I like a city in the south that is doing its best to keep up. (best of both worlds ...is the south and an upscale city with opportunity!
No problem! You sound like you may be more of the hip liberal type, and if you are the 5 points South, Downtown, and Southside neighborhoods would fit you perfectly. Some will tell you to live in the suburbs, and thats cool because we have great suburbs, but the neighborhoods I named above are inside the city and fit you perfectly. I live in Southside, and love it! If you are looking for quiet suburban life, thats fine, but you sound more like me, so I would say check out the actual city limits.

You're right about people loving Mobile, because I have visited many times and the city is beautiful. Mobile is actually one of my favorite cities in the entire US of A! There is also not a better Mardi Gras in the country than in Mobile!

Mobile is not on the coast, it is on a muddy bay and the nicest beach is at least an hour away in Pensacola, with blue water and white sand. Dauphin Island is closer but not blue water. Birmingham has a more city feel to it. Mobile's population is generally conservative, provincial in their thinking, not progressive.

Why the attitude towards Mobile? So Mobile is not technically on the coast by definition. The county is still a coastal county. Mobile is however progressive unlike your false allegation. The county added 10,000 residents in the last 3 years, and the city added 3,000.

Mobile may not have great beaches but Gulf Shores does. Dauphin Island is more of a family beach anyways. What you are saying is probably because, (a) you never been here, (b) you are from Birmingham lol, (c) you have no clue what your talking about or (d) all of the above lol

Score - D lol

EDIT: Only reason I put from Birmingham is because the thread is B-ham or MOB, but personally I love Birmingham.
