Seems like the newer homes have a wood frame with lwhat ooks like pressboard with brick over that..how do those materials stand up to the severe weather?

It all depends on how well constructed the home is. If a minimal number of fasteners are used, and the job is sloppy, it might be gone with the wind. If straps are used to attach the rafters, and care is taken in construction, the OSB sheathing shouldn't be an issue. It is usually covered with tyvek to prevent water damage and improve the air-tightness of the house. If you are concerned, hiring a home inspector that has been in the building trades might be a good idea.
