In all fairness to Cullman,( and according to some) , all places in Alabama save Huntsville, Birmingham, Mobile , Montgomery, Auburn, and Tuscaloosa ( and even some parts of these towns ) could be characterized as you have characterized Cullman ...its all relative especially in the South

I used to live in Arley which is very near Cullman and frankly, I still drove back to Jasper for shopping and such over going to Cullman because Cullman is a small-and-closed-minded place. I don't like the people there.
I have blue hair and I got glared at SO much in Cullman. I don't get glared at in Jasper. I get complimented and asked what dye I use. Cullman gives me the vibe of "you don't belong here" just for having blue hair. If I wasn't white, I wouldn't go there at all. There are no black people in Cullman. I have driven through that area so many times and I swear I've never seen a black person there even in Walmart. It freaks me out that it's so white because most places have at least SOME ethnic diversity. Cullman is known for KKK activity and it's right next to Winston county which is even worse in that way. (There's still a sign on one of the roads into Winston County that read "The Free State of Winston County" that I've been told was place there when Winston wanted to remove itself from Alabama so it could keep slaves or segregation (I don't remember which) ... either way, those areas are not happy to people who don't fit in with the straight, white, Christian (and the right kind of Christian, as in "Southern Christian") "normal" family.

If you'd move to Cullman, I'd say take a look at Jasper over Cullman. I've lived in Jasper most of my adult life and it's not a bad place. It's still not open-minded and awesome... I'm still looking for a place like that. I hear if you want open-mindedness you have to go either to Huntsville, Montgomery or out of State.

You might want to study history a little more closely.

Just before the Civil War, Winston County did not want to secede from the Union, like the rest of Alabama. They actually seceded from the Confederacy. They wanted to stay a part of the Union.

There were few if any slave holders in Winston County...as in Cullman County. That's the reason there are so few African Americans in the area. They weren't brought there in the first place.
