For our vacation this year,My wife and I are going to Florida again. I want to visit the Alabama capitol building to add to my list of the ones we've visited. We're going to spend the night in Montgomery and look around for a bit before heading on down to Florida.

Most likely we will only get to eat lunch in Montgomery before heading out,but we might arrive early enough the night before for something besides a quick meal. Where should we eat?? Nothing terribly fancy or expensive is my only real requirement.

Is the Hank Williams Museum worth visiting?? I do want to see his statue and possibly his gravesite. What other recommendations do you have?

I have to ask about how safe the town is,and how bad panhandling is. Nothing personal because I would ask this about anyplace I was planning to visit.

There is a BBQ place downtown on Tallapoosa St (100 block) that would be a good choice. That part of downtown has been totally built up on the last 15 years. Nice area. Another option is the 1000 block of E Fairview Ave (near Huntington College) which is in Montgomery's old garden district. There is a great pizza place there and an adjoining cafe that is also worth a stop. Good texmex right across the street too. Very nice area.

I've never been to the Hank Williams museum. Any basic Montgomery city guide will educate you on the various 'old south' sights downtown. I've never invested too much time doing this but it's probably interesting.

I lived in the city for 4 years. I never had any problem with panhandlers, except mabye a few of the ratty gas stations you find along I65. The city is much safer than it was in the 80s/90s. It's very quiet. A very 'sleepy' kind of city. There are still some bad hoods but I just never witnessed much spillover, aside from your usual petty theft in the adjoining bedroom communities. Just keep your wits about you like you would anywhere else.
