I bought a 7500 watt diesel generator (and small window a/c) after Hurricane Dennis. I haven't had to really use it yet, but I let it run an hour or so every now and then, it seems to be really efficient. I can barely even pull the thing around, it weighs a ton.

Ours is natural gas and hasn't been a bit of trouble except for a little external rust. Luckily there hasn't been an outage as long as Opal brought since then but it's been run for a couple days in a row a few times over the years.

Y'all take good care of yourselves and if you stay make sure you have everything you need to be safe. If you leave be careful on the roads and don't forget to pack your meds.

I don't know why but this particular hurricane scares me. I know it is cat. 2 but I have a really bad feeling about it. This is not a rational fear so I'm trying to ignore it but I still worry about all of you.

We, OTOH, had a 5KW generator and about 15 gallons of gas - AND four marine batteries, an inverter, and a solar panel. By careful load management, we were still fine two weeks later, had washed clothes and taken hot showers, and our refrigerator was never without power. Around here, a 1200 watt unit is sufficient for most needs, which means gas can last even longer.
I used to work for a guy who bragged to us about his whole house generator and how he'd turn on his outside floodlights at night just to further demonstrate that he had power.

I hope Isaac is as much a dud where you are as it was here in SW Florida. Hang in there and be safe.

Stay safe my friends.. Looks like it is going to miss you but that doesn't mean you won't have power outages.

Definitely looking better for AL, but still under hurricane warning for the Alabama Gulf Coast -- and still way out of the woods from the eastern side of this storm for outer rings rain/flood/wind damage. Here are all the latest weather alerts, warnings and watches for AL by county:

Alabama Severe Weather Alerts, Watches, Warnings - weather.com

Note: Gas prices up 30-40 cents/gal here from Friday until Monday - an unfortunate byproduct of having these storms in the Gulf!
