Hey! I'm a divorced mom of 2 currently living in SE Missouri. There are no jobs here, no recreational opportunities, the school system is pathetic, and the drug problem is extremely bad, especially meth. In short, I'm beyond ready to leave and make a new life for myself & my kiddos.

While I've considered several areas, I'm closely looking at the gulf coast area of AL. I just don't know which of the towns would fit our needs because I'm not familiar with any of them.

Needs:
1) Plenty of nursing jobs with good wages.
2) Affordable rent & utilities for a decent home in a safe neighborhood.
3) Low violent crime.
4) Affordable child care.
5) Great public school system with a lot of extracurricular activities.
6) Ample recreational opportunities, from outdoorsy to cultural. I'd prefer to have a zoo, museum, aquarium, the beach, etc. within a 30 minute drive.

Wants:
1) Not saturated with tourists
2) Less conservative
3) Plenty of single men (mid 30's to 40's)

Can anyone help?

TIA!

Are you wanting a small town, or more of a city?

Whichever would be fine, as long as it meets the requirements above

I have no problem commuting 20 minutes or so to work, shop, etc.

The bigger hospitals in Mobile (Mobile Infirmary, Springhill Memorial, Providence) are an hour away from the beach, and areas within 30 minutes of the beach will be more expensive. I suggest looking around Saraland or Satsuma, the schools are decent and the housing isn't overpriced. The commute to work wouldn't be too bad either.

Another possibility is Pace, Florida. Good schools and low crime, not really "touristy". You would commute to one of the larger hospitals Pensacola (Sacred Heart, West Florida Hospital, Baptist Hospital).

Fairhope comes to mind since there is a hospital there. Schools are good and you are right on the bay. You can even live in one of the smaller towns around the area. Not sure how many single men there are but there are a lot of boats so that means a lot of men.

Fairhope is very safe and while there are some tourist it isn't like Gulf Shores where there are long lines of traffic on the weekends going to and from the beach.

Mobile is a beautiful city with lots of nursing jobs but there are so many areas that you wouldn't want to live. I found a darling house in midtown for 125K. Many folks send their kids to private schools in Mobile..

There are plenty of nice areas and good public schools in Mobile like Murphy. Especially west Mobile and no most people don't send their kids to private school there.

Its also going to have the most social activities and jobs in the area. Moderator cut: snip you can find a decent area to live in West Mobile or Mid town then you aren't really looking.

I grew up in west Mobile and went to Baker HS. I don't have any complaints about either one.

You should visit and check it out for yourself. We all have opinions on different areas. I love Mobile as I was born and raised there but it has changed a lot since then. I went to Murphy and am glad that it is still a good school.
