Spoken like someone who has never visited Alabama before.

I would sooner live in Alabama than ALASKA though! What does Alaska have or do better than Alabama? Alabama has four cities that are larger than Anchorage by metro, all with a LOT more to offer, including preferred climate. Alabama has over 6 times as many people as Alaska.

When you're referring to these national rankings I would like to see some sources. Show me national rankings where Alabama ranks at the bottom. A lot of people confuse Alabama's placement with Mississippi's placement. Alabama is MUCH more progressive than Mississippi. However, I'd still rather live in Mississippi than Alaska. Mississippi has the gulf coast with 11 luxury casino resorts, Mississippi has more in the way of history, universities, sports, and people than Alaska.

To answer the OP's question I think I would like Huntsville or Mobile. Probably Mobile by a bit due to its waterfront location. Huntsville due to it being a well to do city, growing at a nice pace with few cons about it.

I have found the Huntsville area is a tremendous place to live. There are many here who care about education, health, quality of life, etc. The most intelligent people I have met in my 65 years live here and have an impact here.

Furthermore I don't know where you will find more natural beauty. I even love the summers here!
Why is this no longer funny?

Default Regarding education results

--I firmly believe education is what you make of it. My vocabulary score on college board exams (ACT) after attending the Auburn and Opelika, Alabama public schools was in the top 2% in the nation--not local, not state, not regional--NATIONAL. My overall score was in the top tier. Additionally, I had a cousin who was a Rhodes scholar and again, he was Alabama public school educated. Sweeping generalizations are something native Alabamians have had to endure forever---

Huntsville is about as nice a town as you will find anywhere in the states.

B'ham seems nice too although traffic is a problem on 280.

I do think the "rampant social conservatism" as a whole is a problem here though. It all too often stifles growth, and general common sense reform. AL (and MS for that matter) are often the last two states of the 50 to pass new legislation. AL is the only state in the Deep South that does not have some form of lottery/gambling, etc. Georgia's lottery system provides a free college education to thousands of students each and every year, while AL is/was more worried about making sure you can't buy beer above a 4% alcoholic content.

To answer the OP, I have lived in Mobile, AL for 24 years, spending the better part of my youth here. Now married, and a mid-career professional, my wife and I are looking forward to moving on from the area, and seeing other parts of the country. And I don't see us ever moving back.

Denver is actually where we are headed. An amazing city. For me, there would be no comparison between Denver and Huntsville. None. Zero. Zilch.

The funniest thing I've read yet? That someone would rather have high humidity than live in a dry climate. Chapstick and water. Boom done. I'll take that over breaking a sweat walking to the mailbox.

Somebody has themselves convinced. And just because you mentioned Alaska . . . . .

AL 34th in education
MS 48th
AK 32nd

AL 45th in health ranking
MS 49th
AK 28th

AL 47th in economic opportunity

Alaska 19th

I've lived in both AL and MS (Mobile & Gautier/Biloxi). I'd never recommend for anyone to live in either. Having known several native Alaskans, it is a pretty amazing place if you can deal with the climate and amount of snowfall.

I never said Alabama was more progressive than Alaska, and three national rankings don't prove one state is better than the other. What you made bold was Alabama is more progressive than Mississippi, which is true, and your "rankings" prove it.

I'd much rather live in Alabama than Alaska, just from the weather standpoint alone. Seems like a weird comparison, though.

Why do you love Alaska so much? Do you live there?

I have nothing against Alaska but it seems like an unlikely place for people to relocate to, especially a state as far away as Alabama is.
