Hi,
My husband has accepted a position in Iuka MS and we are looking for some direction. We have 2-highschool children who will be leaving all their friends and family, so we want to make this as smooth a transition as we can.

Currently, my husband travels an hour to work. If he were to continue to do the same (although I hope not) we could relocate to either MS, TN or AL. As for our family, we currently have a little farm. We have horses, goats & chickens. Our daughter participates in rodeo, our son is an athlete. We currently live in a dry town without a single traffic light and are used to traveling 30min to grocery shop and 1hr to go to the mall.

We are looking for a farm, have lived in both a historic home and a new home. We would truly appreciate any information, both recommendations and "stay away from" areas. Thanks so much for your time.

Iuka is VERY small...it's claim to fame is a rocket fuel plant that DIDN'T get built...but it's earlier claim was that it was where many, many couples went to get married back in the 1930s, '40s and '50s! I think you didn't have to have blood tests or something.
You might want to consider Corinth, Miss. Nice small town with excellent schools. It would be closer than Florence, Ala., a nice medium-sized town with good schools. In both these areas you could buy some land out from town. Usually if you are in the county and want to attend city schools you have to
pay some tuition - usually very low, a few hundred a year. Otherwise you would attend county schools, which are usually not as good. USUALLY - you will have to check that out carefully! Good luck, and welcome to our area!

I worked at the "didn't get built" rocket plant for awhile

Many rocket folk lived at Pickwick Lake / Shiloh battlefield or in Florence. Pickwick is better known for the Memphis lake house crowd - lots of development. Depending on where your husband works (Iuka or Yellow Creek), you can comfortably commute from an area bounded by Corinth MS, Savannah TN, Florence AL, or almost Tupelo MS. Lots of small farms available.

Beautiful country, friendly people, don't know of a stay-away area except for some parts of the towns.

I would recommend that you look at the Muscle Shoals/Tuscumbia County AL area...it is on the Tennessee River and very pretty....about a 40 mile drive from there to Iuka and likely has better schools and definitely better healthcare and shopping...

I would go to that area and look for some land along Highway 72 West as you go out of Tuscumbia...you may be able to find some land near the river where you can build a home or find a historic one....Highway 72 would also be a good route for your husband to drive to work - 4 lane.

Thank you to everyone who took time to respond to my post. We are so very excited and so very scared all at the same time!

We did get a chance to visit and spent 4-days just driving around. We thought we took good notes, but then we came home and....well maybe they aren't so good!

Do any of the schools in North AL participate in High School Rodeo? Thanks again!

My niece was big into the rodeo in S. Al while in school. She won a lot of stuff and they traveled all over AL. I don't think it was through the school though. If you need more info I can call my sister.

We are here if you have more questions..

The only thing I'm skeered of around Iuka are the rattlesnakes - they're HUGE!

Don't worry, it's a great area.

Dang, I would love to relocate to any of these beautiful Southern states. I'm stuck here in annoying fast-paced Yankeeland for now, but definitely have a Southern heart and Southern ancestral roots.

Ohio keeps getting more and more expensive, with a crappier economy, and more liberal/socialist all the time (I think there's a direct, causal relationship among all those things).

As another poster mentioned, these areas of the Southland are "Beautiful country, friendly people" and probably as close as you get to paradise right here on good ol' green Earth.

If I could ever find a job around northern AL/MS in my field, I'd move in a heartbeat...
