Hi all,

I'm moving to Montgomery in a month or so from New York City and wanted some advice on the best places to live and go out. Is there an area with a good amount of young people or young professionals?

I like to go out to bars, restaurants, and would love to find an area that is at least walkable to a couple of restaurants and shops. Also, I'm a single female, so I'd like to find a relatively safe area.

Any advice on where I should be looking for apartments or where to go to meet other people in their mid-twenties would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Look in Old Cloverdale for a relatively safe, somewhat walkable area with a couple of restaurants and shops - note that 'couple' is an apt description.

You will need a car to live in Montgomery.

Thanks for the advice! Yes, I'll definitely be getting a car, but wanted to find an area where I could walk to some places if I wanted to.

I'll check out Old Cloverdale!

Prepare thyself for culture shock. Watch several dozen episodes of Green Acres and you'll get the idea.

Seriously! What in the world would make you move to Montgomery from NYC?

I second Old Cloverdale. Nice little neighborhood just south of downtown.. which also has several restaurants and bars you can frequent. You'd definitely have to drive it though.

Haha, I know it's gonna be a big change, but I've got an amazing job offer which will skyrocket me up the ladder in my career- as long as I can live in Montgomery for a year or so. I'll have to learn to slow down my NYC pace, for sure.

Thanks for the advice!

Recommend finding the El Rey to start your Old Cloverdale search.

El Rey Burrito Lounge

Here's a new urbanism development (couple of bars / restaurants to check out):

Hampstead | Montgomery Alabama Real Estate | Community | Dining

If you like theater:

Home | Alabama Shakespeare Festival

Montgomery is ~3 hours or so from the beach:

Gulf Shores Alabama - Orange Beach - Alabama Gulf Coast Vacations

To cpg: IIRC Green Acres was set within 300 miles of Chicago, with likely settings being Illinois or Missouri.

You better get ready lol. I used to live in Virginia Beach for a year and was very boring. The only time that it would get busy was during Summer. Other than that it was very boring. However if you have a nice paying job, you can always travel to different cities. Thereby, you will never get bored.

Seems like to have the right mindset going in and that's half the battle. Old Cloverdale is a great option...anything near Huntington College would be really nice. Also don't rule out downtown. There are some urban style loft/studio options there now. And these days there is a decent amount of activity downtown centered on the convention center and minor league baseball scene. Downtown used to be pretty derelict about 20 years ago but it has turned around. Montgomery really isn't dangerous. More petty crime than there should be but some basic street smarts and a home alarm system will get you through just fine. It's a nice town, enjoy your time.
