I love being near water/tropic type areas.
LOVE to fish.
Schools are no longer important and from what I see, affordability doesn't seem to be a problem compared to Chicago condo rentals.
My concerns are location and race relations.
I've read about surrounding towns but don't want to be too far from the water.
Traffic and driving distances don't worry me either as it pertains to shopping or entertainment.
Being from the north, I know NOTHING about the current state of race relations in the area and need more honest information in that area. I'd hate to relocate just to have to relocate again.
Thanks for any information anyone can share.

I will say race relations in Alabama is no different from the rest of the country. As a matter of fact I have recently read about more race related conflict outside the south than in the south. There is a huge influx of midwestern transplants in Baldwin County and they almost out number natives. Mobile County is more diverse than Baldwin but I have never had any issues in the Foley, Orange Beach , and Gulf Shores area. Thankfully it's been a long time sense Alabama has been featured on the media do to racial conflict but there are states and cities who have but most don't think of them having those issues because their past does not mimic the 60s in Alabama.

I've never known any racial problems down that way, but it's really mostly white people down near the coast. The highest black population is probably Bay Minette (county seat) up in the north end of the county.
