Thankfully this is a free country and I am allowed to think, believe and pretty much say what I want...I didn't condemn the entire AL population, I condemned the archaic/unfair/stupid laws - I only called it like I see it & we will just have to agree to disagree

And it never really come up in conversations either - we are what we are. Only once have I gotten the "oh, you are European, you must believe in socialized medicine"...which I found immensely funny at the time

When I told people we were moving to AL, I got the standard "OMG, YOU in Alabama!!!" I came here hoping to prove them wrong...I/we absolutely love living here and I truly haven't come across the "backwardness" I am seeing for example online, primarily on AL.com/news articles. I have never before been told I am going to hell for not agreeing with someone. I'm just gobsmacked when I see stuff like this, why go backwards? Or, does the powers that be aim for keeping AL from moving forward? My understanding is that Bentley wants to bring in businesses from other states, bring in more jobs, well, with that comes non-Alabamans...and they want to have a glass of wine or three without having to drive 10 miles across county lines to get that.
Huntsville and the larger cities don't have that vibe. However, I've visited a various number of smaller and rural areas in the state and without a doubt, there was a "backwards" mentality going on.

I will say that the legislative process is very backwards here. Gee, lets put county politics on an entire state ballot because thats the only way. Really? Coming from Florida I find that an aweful way of getting things done. Florida's legislative problem is that its too easy to get anything done.

Alabama is lagging behind 47 other states in job growth since 2010, no companies are coming here without the governor paying them handsomely. The ALGOP should be addressing the basic issue with the AL Constitution that causes such results, and writing a law to allow for the recall of elected persons, federal and state.

The law that allowed the small cities to go wet was passed in 2009, thank Bob Riley for this mess.

Prohibition was repealed. Every law relating to prohibition should have been repealed with it.

We are not a democracy in the truest sense; we are a republic and minorities don't get trampled over just because the majority voted on something.

Also, telling Yankees to go home because they have different opinions is extremely close minded.
While we are not a democracy we are a representative republic. The minority still loses even in a representative republic. Anytime something is put up for a vote the minority will always lose. It seems you believe in the mindset of the minority trying to impose their will on the majority. That's not how it was ever supposed to work. The minority has found ways though through judicial activism to try to impose their agendas on a majority of the people.

We are high up there on some lists.

Like guns per capita
Like bibles per capita
Like CVS and mattress stores on every corner.

But seriously, one poster mentioned that Huntsville is different than other places in Alabama. He/she was so right. Some on this list just wouldn't make it out in real Alabama.

Go down to Rainbow City and talk politics/religion/football with them. All three topics are the same down there. I love family reunions.

What? I didn't say the minority rules. I said the majority can't take rights away from the minority. In other words, the Constitution trumps.

I actually haven't met anyone in the real world who made me doubt moving to Alabama. It's all been people I see in the news and on this board that make Alabama look a little nutty.
