I believe you have asked this question before but Birmingham has the most urban downtown and seems to have the most major projects there is no denying that downtown Birmingham is on the come back !! We have a few projects going on in downtown Mobile as well but not on the caliber as the magic city !!! From what I last saw the downtown weekday foot traffic between Mobile and Birmingham was about the same and Mobile`s downtown dive bar scene seemed to be more integrated or in a more confined area sense we do have a entertainment district which is our version of Bourbon or Belle street. Also if i`m not mistaking I think Mobile is the only city where you are allowed to walk the streets with alcohol within the entertainment district you guys correct me if i`m wrong. Out side of that B -ham`s downtown is more urban.

There have been movements by the city council to ease open container laws. The first step, for Uptown, is already done. Lakeview is next.

Birmingham has the largest, most active, most urban downtown core in Alabama by far.

PortCity - Huntsville allows 'open carry' alcohol within the entertainment districts.

Now that is deffinantly a shocker.Decatur also has a downtown grid lay out if i'm not mistaking. I think Decatur is one of those towns that was suppose to have been bigger than what it is today. I saw some good bones when I visited that city in 2008.

Not really a grid. There are two parts to our downtown, because we were two different cities until about 1925. "Supposed to have been bigger?"
Are you confusing us with Gadsden?

Huntsville has done an amazing job IMO trying to make downtown a happening place on the weekends. They now allow food trucks and the open carry has definitely helped their cause. It didn't happen overnight but at least they are making progress.

Huntsville also has some nice events during the spring/summer.
