My husband and I are taking a roadtrip from OH to AL to visit my father for a weekend. He lives near the Rickwood Caverns state park. I am finding it pretty difficult to find a hotel (3*) that isn't too far from his home. Naturally, we are looking for a safe area. I narrowed it down to 3...Cullman, downtown Birmingham and Fultondale. I'm familiar with the Cullman area as I had family there but I remember that is a dry county. I hear that downtown Bham is not the safest but it Five Points nightlife intrigues us. I'm not sure of Fultondale area. If anyone could give me any insight or suggestions on any other areas that would be awesome!
Thanks in advance!

Hotels in the Gardendale area, just on the northside of B'ham, would be safe. Fultondale is more sketchy. The UAB area of B'ham is OK, with some cautions, and it is near 5 Points. Just over the Mountain in Homewood is safe, and it's fairly close to 5 Points, too, and close to some fine dining. Birmingham really needs more hotels. For dining ideas: BirminghamMenus.com - Birmingham, Alabama's best restaurant dining guide. . The "Ham" has some world-class fine dining - Highland Bar & Grill, Bottega, Ocean, Cafe DuPont, Hot & HOt Fish Club. Enjoy!
There is just nothing right around the Rickwood Caverns area...it's very rural. Also, you will not see a sign for the caverns going south. The only sign on the interstate - and it's a road sign - is headed north. Rickwood is a state park, so it's not promoted very well. And you are right, Cullman is still dry.
Welcome back to Alabama!

Hotel Highlands at Five Points South is a blast and has a King Non-Smoking for $119.00.

Spend a little more and have a blast!

Ditto on Hotel Highlands. It's great. Plus you're a block away from Highlands Bar and Grill, rated by Gourmet as one of the Top Five restaurants in the country. Enjoy.

thanks for the replies...

That Highland Hotel looks cool! Question...looking at the restaurants/bars that are in the Five Points area...is it 'safe' to walk to those places? are cabs available?

Since when did Fultondale become sketchy compared to Birmingham city?

As with anywhere; you need to be aware of your surroundings, but for the most part it is safe. Police patrol the area well and cabs are available.

Well, I'm not connected to the club scene anymore, but there are any number of places very close to where you are staying. Zydeco, WorkPlay, the Nick, and any number of other places.

Your best bet? When you get to town, pick up a copy of Black & White or Birmingham Weekly (Two pretty good alternative weeklies) and peruse the listings. They have set lists that are always extensive.
